Dr Ketan Bhatikar Reacts To Ponda Bypoll Cancellation

Panaji: Social activist and political leader Dr Ketan Bhatikar has strongly criticised the cancellation of the Ponda Assembly bypoll, describing the development as a matter of grave concern for democracy. His remarks came after the High Court set aside the election process and cancelled the by-election that was scheduled to be held on April 9, a decision that has sparked widespread political debate across Goa.

Reacting to the court’s order, Dr Bhatikar said the cancellation raises serious questions about the functioning of the electoral process and the democratic rights of the people. He alleged that such developments weaken public faith in democratic institutions and called for greater accountability and transparency in the conduct of elections.

Referring to the situation as a threat to democracy, Bhatikar stressed that citizens must have confidence in a fair, free, and transparent electoral system. He urged the concerned authorities to ensure that any issues affecting the election process are addressed promptly so that voters are not deprived of their democratic right to elect their representative.

The High Court’s decision to cancel the April 9 Ponda bypoll has already generated significant political reactions, with leaders from different parties offering contrasting views on the implications of the ruling. While some have welcomed the judgment as an affirmation of the rule of law, others have expressed concern over its impact on the electorate and the delay in filling the vacant Assembly seat.

The cancellation has placed the spotlight on the legal and administrative aspects of conducting elections, with political observers closely watching the next steps to be taken by the Election Commission and the state authorities. Fresh announcements regarding the by-election are expected only after the legal process is completed and necessary directions are issued.

As political discussions continue to intensify, the issue is likely to remain a key topic of public debate in Goa, with citizens and political stakeholders awaiting further clarity on the future course of the Ponda Assembly constituency.
