Benaulim, Goa: Residents and members of civil society from Benaulim on Monday submitted a memorandum to local authorities seeking strict action over the alleged hate speech controversy that has sparked protests across Goa in recent days.
The memorandum was submitted at the local police station as citizens expressed concern over the alleged remarks made in Vasco, stating that such statements have the potential to hurt public sentiments and disturb the state’s long-standing tradition of communal harmony.
Participants urged authorities to conduct a fair and impartial investigation and to ensure that appropriate legal action is taken in accordance with the law. They emphasized that Goa has always been known for its peaceful coexistence among people of different faiths and communities, and appealed for every effort to be made to preserve that legacy.
The gathering remained peaceful, with citizens carrying placards and expressing their concerns through slogans before formally handing over the memorandum to officials. Police personnel were present to maintain law and order and ensure that the programme concluded without any untoward incidents.
The Benaulim memorandum is part of a series of civic actions being witnessed across different parts of Goa, where various organisations, community groups, and residents have approached authorities demanding accountability over the controversy. Similar representations have been submitted in several towns, reflecting growing public concern over the issue.
Officials have reiterated that the matter is under investigation and have appealed to the public to maintain peace, avoid spreading unverified information, and allow the legal process to take its course. Authorities also cautioned against sharing inflammatory content on social media that could further escalate tensions.
As the investigation continues, the Goa government has reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining communal harmony and ensuring that any violation of the law is dealt with in accordance with legal procedures. Further developments are expected as police continue their inquiry into the case.
