Panaji: Growing concerns over the condition of several aging buildings in Mapusa’s bustling market area have prompted residents and traders to call for immediate action from the authorities before a tragedy occurs.
Many of the structures, some of which are decades old, are reportedly showing signs of deterioration, including cracked walls, weakened facades, and damaged balconies. With thousands of shoppers, vendors, and commuters passing through the market daily, locals fear that the risk of structural collapse poses a serious threat to public safety.
Residents have urged the concerned departments to conduct comprehensive structural audits of old buildings, identify those that pose an immediate danger, and take necessary remedial measures. Traders have also expressed concern that delays in addressing the issue could put both lives and livelihoods at risk.
The demand for urgent intervention comes amid increasing awareness of the dangers posed by neglected infrastructure, particularly during the monsoon season when continuous rainfall can further weaken aging structures.
Citizens are now appealing to the authorities to prioritize public safety by enforcing building safety regulations, carrying out timely inspections, and ensuring that hazardous structures are either repaired or demolished before disaster strikes.
