Ro-Ro Ferry to Begin Operations on July 14

Goa’s much-anticipated Ro-Ro ferry service connecting Chorao and Ribandar is scheduled to launch on July 14, announced River Navigation Minister Subhash Phal Dessai. Designed to significantly cut travel time from around 15-30 minutes to just 5-7 minutes, the service is expected to benefit daily commuters and reduce road congestion. However, the minister stated that if residents of Chorao continue to resist the initiative, the ferry will be shifted to another route where it’s welcomed.

Two vessels, Gangotri and Dwarka, built by Vijay Marine, will operate on this route. Each vessel can accommodate 15 cars, 40 two-wheelers, and around 100 passengers. The ferries are equipped with dual loading ramps, air-conditioned passenger cabins, and safety gear, ensuring a smooth and secure ride. Minister Phal Dessai emphasised that the service is being introduced based on demand from Panaji and Betim commuters. He encouraged Chorao residents to experience the ferry before forming opinions and highlighted that the government is open to feedback. If successful, the Ro-Ro model could be expanded to other parts of Goa.
