Shirgao, Goa: The village of Shirgao came alive with devotion and tradition as thousands of devotees thronged the streets for the annual Shri Devi Lairai Jatra, one of Goa’s most revered and spiritually significant festivals.
The celebrations witnessed an overwhelming turnout of devotees from across Goa and neighbouring states, with the village transformed into a sea of faith as people gathered to seek the blessings of Shri Devi Lairai. The annual jatra, steeped in centuries-old customs, is regarded as one of the state’s most important religious events, attracting lakhs of pilgrims every year.
As night fell, the much-awaited ceremonial procession began, with the beautifully flower-adorned idol of Shri Devi Lairai carried through the village amidst the rhythmic beats of traditional instruments, devotional chants, and cries of “Jai Lairai.” Thousands of devotees lined the streets to witness the sacred procession, while the Dhonds—devotees who undertake religious vows—walked alongside the deity as part of their spiritual commitment.
The highlight of the night was the Homkund, the sacred fire-walking ritual that has been preserved through generations. In this remarkable act of faith, hundreds of Dhonds walked barefoot across a bed of glowing embers after offering prayers to the goddess, believing that their devotion and unwavering faith grant them divine protection. The ritual, performed in the early hours, remains one of the most extraordinary religious traditions in Goa and continues to draw devotees and visitors from across the country.
Authorities had made elaborate arrangements to manage the massive influx of pilgrims, deploying police personnel, traffic police, fire and emergency services, and medical teams to ensure the festival concluded safely. Traffic diversions, crowd-control measures, and emergency response units were put in place to facilitate the smooth movement of devotees throughout the celebrations.
The Shri Devi Lairai Jatra is not only a major religious occasion but also a celebration of Goa’s rich cultural and spiritual heritage. The centuries-old festival reflects the deep-rooted traditions, unwavering faith, and strong sense of community that continue to define Goan society.
As dawn approached, devotees dispersed after offering prayers, carrying with them blessings, renewed faith, and memories of one of Goa’s most spectacular and spiritually uplifting festivals.
