Cuncolim Local Dies After Belagavi Native Hits Two-Wheeler

A tragic road accident on NH66 claimed the life of Ulhas Gaonkar, a 45-year-old resident of Cuncolim, on Sunday evening. The incident occurred when Gaonkar’s two-wheeler was struck by a car allegedly driven by a Belagavi native currently residing in Davorlim.

According to police reports, Gaonkar was travelling from Margao towards Cuncolim when the car, reportedly speeding, collided with his vehicle. Eyewitnesses stated that the impact was severe, and the victim was dragged for nearly 100 metres before the car came to a halt. Locals rushed to assist and alerted emergency services.

Gaonkar sustained serious head injuries and multiple bodily wounds. Despite efforts to save him, he succumbed to his injuries while being transported to the South Goa District Hospital in Margao.

Police have registered a case against the driver for rash and negligent driving, and an investigation is underway to determine the exact circumstances of the crash. The vehicle involved has been seized for inspection.

Residents of Cuncolim expressed grief over the loss and called for stricter enforcement of traffic regulations on NH66, which has witnessed several accidents in recent months. “Speeding and reckless driving have become common here. Authorities must act before more lives are lost,” said a local resident.

The tragic incident serves as a reminder of the growing need for road safety awareness and responsible driving. Authorities have urged motorists to adhere to speed limits and exercise caution, especially on busy highways.

As the investigation continues, the community mourns the untimely death of Ulhas Gaonkar, remembered as a hardworking and respected member of Cuncolim.
