Loliem Locals Oppose Film City Project on Bhagwati Plateau

Loliem-Polem, Canacona – July 2025:
Plans to develop a Film City on the Bhagwati Plateau in Loliem have drawn strong opposition from villagers, who argue the project threatens an ecologically sensitive area. Residents have initiated a signature campaign and expressed their intent to challenge the proposal legally if authorities don’t withdraw approvals within 15 days.

The site in question spans approximately 10 lakh sq. m, and was earlier greenlit by the local communidade and supported by the Entertainment Society of Goa (ESG). However, locals refer to past gram sabha resolutions from 2016 and 2023, which explicitly objected to non-agricultural or commercial development on the plateau. Residents say the proposed complex, including studios, resorts, and amusement spaces could endanger the plateau’s fragile ecosystem, disrupt water sources, and impact traditional livelihoods. They are now seeking wider public support and preparing to escalate the matter through legal and civic action.
