The seasonal wild mushrooms known as Roen Almi have largely disappeared from Goa’s markets this monsoon. Local authorities and environmental experts have advised against harvesting due to growing health risks from poisonous lookalikes and the ecological strain caused by overcollection. These mushrooms, which naturally grow on termite mounds, play a key role in forest ecosystems. Their absence reflects a broader push for public safety and conservation, encouraging residents to give nature time to regenerate and to opt for farm-grown alternatives instead.
