Goa’s Directorate of Fisheries commemorated National Fish Farmers Day with a special event in Curtorim, attended by Fisheries Minister Nilkant Halarnkar, Curtorim MLA Aleixo Reginaldo Lourenco, and other key officials including Secretary (Fisheries) Prasanna Acharya (IAS) and Director Dr. Shamila Monteiro.

The day pays tribute to the historic work of Dr. Hiralal Chaudhuri and Dr. K.H. Alikunhi, who pioneered induced breeding in Indian Major Carps in 1957, revolutionising India’s inland aquaculture. Minister Halarnkar acknowledged Goa’s growing role in marine and inland fisheries, and shared that the state has already recorded a 400-tonne increase in fish production this year under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY). As part of new initiatives, the Fisheries Department also announced the public sale of white-leg shrimp at a subsidised rate of ₹350 per kilo starting July 11, available at the Directorate’s office in Panaji.
