MOLASSES LEAK CONTAMINATES KHALWADDEM RIVULET

A significant environmental scare has gripped Shristhal, Canacona, following a massive leak of waste molasses into the local Khalwaddem rivulet. The incident occurred when a rusted section of a defunct tank, which was in the process of being dismantled at the Shristhal Industrial Estate, unexpectedly collapsed and released the hazardous waste into the open. This sudden discharge has sparked widespread panic and serious concerns regarding water contamination and the broader safety of the surrounding environment.

The immediate effects of the spill were felt by local agricultural workers, who noticed the rivulet’s water—essential for irrigating nearby chilli and vegetable fields—had turned an alarming reddish hue. Some individuals who came into contact with the contaminated water even reported experiencing skin irritation on their hands and legs. Beyond the immediate human impact, local farmers and environmental advocates fear the pollution will severely damage downstream crops and threaten marine life in the Talpona river, into which the rivulet eventually flows.

In the wake of the disaster, outraged residents confronted Canacona officials and police at the site, accusing authorities of gross negligence. Locals alleged that they had previously warned officials about the risks and that adequate precautionary measures were completely ignored despite this prior knowledge. Following the confrontation, the Deputy Collector and local police intervened to maintain order, and the responsible company has been ordered to submit an immediate action plan detailing how they will safely dispose of the waste without causing further environmental damage.
