Panaji, July 26, 2025 – The Goa Cabinet has taken a significant step by approving the formation of the state’s third district, which will include Canacona, Quepem, Sanguem, and Dharbandora talukas—currently part of South Goa. The move is aimed at improving administrative efficiency and focusing development efforts, particularly in regions with a high tribal population.

Although some reports suggest Curchorem will be the new district’s headquarters, government officials have clarified that the location is still being evaluated and a final decision has not yet been made.

Once finalized, this new district could be eligible for the Aspirational District Programme, allowing it to receive special support and funding for improvements in education, healthcare, agriculture, and infrastructure.

To ensure public input and political consensus, an all-party meeting is scheduled in Canacona on July 29, where further discussions on the district’s structure and governance will take place.

If implemented, this will reshape Goa’s administrative map by reducing the size of South Goa district, which will then consist only of Ponda, Salcete, and Mormugao talukas.
