The long-standing demand for Special Status for Goa has been revived in Parliament, with South Goa MP Captain Viriato Fernandes (Retd) introducing a Private Member’s Bill seeking constitutional safeguards for the state.
The Bill aims to protect Goa’s fragile land and environment by proposing stricter controls on development in eco-sensitive zones. It also seeks stronger legal protection for rivers, forests, beaches, hills, khazan lands, and traditional agricultural areas.
As part of the proposal, the formation of a Goa Sustainable Development Council, headed by the Chief Minister, has been suggested to guide future development while preserving Goa’s cultural and ecological identity.
