The UNESCO World Heritage Committee has officially inscribed the Maratha Military Landscapes, a group of 12 strategically built forts on the World Heritage List. Of the 12 forts recognised, 11 are located in Maharashtra, while one is in Tamil Nadu.

These forts are emblematic of the Maratha Empire’s military ingenuity, governance model, and cultural values. The recognition highlights the architectural brilliance and strategic planning that defined Maratha rule, along with their enduring emphasis on justice and public welfare. Leaders and historians have welcomed the move, encouraging citizens to visit these historic sites and reconnect with the rich legacy of the Maratha dynasty, particularly the ideals promoted by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.
