In a major crackdown, the Cyber Crime Police Station raided an illegal call centre operating from Banginium,Old Goa on the night of Dec 12-13, arresting 7 accused who were caught red-handed.
The accused posed as agents of a fake “Payday” loan company, targeting US citizens with instant loan offers and tricking them into buying gift cards such Apple, Macy’s Sephora, Xbox, Razer Gold, Green Dot, among others.
6 laptops and 4mobile phones have been seized during this.
All accused have been remanded to police custody.
Further investigation is underway to determine the total amount of fraud and identify any possible accomplices.
SP (Cyber Crime) Rahul Gupta stated that Goa Police have busted 9+ illegal call centres in the last two years, mainly targeting foreign nationals.
