Tender issued for Porvorim-Chorao Bridge

The Goa government has floated a tender worth approximately ₹275 crore for the construction of a new bridge connecting Porvorim on the mainland to Chorao Island. The project, initiated through the Goa State Infrastructure Development Corporation (GSIDC), is aimed at improving connectivity and easing transportation for residents of Chorao and surrounding areas.

The proposed bridge will link Salvador-do-Mundo in Porvorim with Madel on Chorao Island, providing an alternative to the existing ferry service that currently serves as the primary mode of transport between the two locations. The infrastructure project is expected to enhance mobility, reduce travel time, and support economic and tourism activities in the region.

According to tender documents, the bridge project is estimated to cost ₹274.83 crore and is expected to be completed within 36 months from the commencement of work. The tender marks a significant step towards the implementation of a long-discussed connectivity project for the island.

While supporters of the project have welcomed the improved connectivity it promises, some environmental groups and residents have raised concerns regarding its potential impact on Chorao’s ecology and heritage. The government has maintained that all necessary clearances and safeguards will be followed during the execution of the project.

The tendering process is now open, and construction is expected to begin after the completion of technical evaluations and the award of the contract.
