ECI Seeks Identity Proof From Sitting Goa MP

Sitting Goa Member of Parliament Capt. Viriato Fernandes has revealed that he received a notice from the Election Commission of India (ECI) seeking identity proof to retain his name on the electoral roll, sparking discussion over voter verification procedures and electoral record management.

Speaking on the matter, Fernandes expressed surprise at receiving the notice, noting that he had already undergone extensive scrutiny before being cleared to contest the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. He highlighted his long-standing voting record, stating that he has been a registered voter since 1989 and has regularly exercised his franchise over the years.

The Congress MP also pointed out that he served in the Indian Navy for more than two decades, during which he continued to remain part of the electoral system through the prescribed procedures. While emphasizing his willingness to comply with the verification process, Fernandes raised concerns about the challenges similar notices could pose for ordinary voters who may find it difficult to provide documents within stipulated timelines.

The development comes amid ongoing efforts by election authorities to update and verify electoral rolls to ensure accuracy and prevent duplication. Election officials maintain that voter verification exercises are routine administrative measures aimed at maintaining the integrity of the electoral process.

The issue has attracted attention across Goa, with political observers and citizens closely following the matter as discussions continue on balancing electoral transparency with voter convenience.
