Speaker Keeps Stand Open On ST Political Reservation

Goa Legislative Assembly Speaker Ganesh Gaonkar has refrained from taking a clear position on the demand for political reservation for the Scheduled Tribe (ST) community, instead stressing that the issue must be addressed through “discussion and dialogue.”

Speaking amid growing pressure from ST groups in Goa, Gaonkar said the matter is sensitive and requires broader consultation rather than a rushed response. His remarks come at a time when the demand for ST political reservation has intensified, with community leaders urging the government to take a firm decision on ensuring representation in the Assembly and local bodies.

Gaonkar’s guarded response is likely to draw attention because he now occupies one of the most important constitutional positions in the Goa Legislative Assembly. While he stopped short of backing or opposing the reservation demand, his emphasis on dialogue suggests the Assembly leadership may prefer a consultative route as the issue gains momentum in the state.

The ST reservation issue has become increasingly prominent in Goa’s political discourse, with tribal community groups publicly insisting that political reservation must be implemented. Gaonkar’s remarks indicate that, for now, the matter remains in the realm of political discussion rather than a concrete legislative commitment.
