Goans Consume Highest Petrol in India

Panaji: Goa has emerged as the highest petrol-consuming state in India on a per capita basis, according to data released by the Petroleum Planning and Analysis Cell (PPAC) for the financial year 2024–25. The figures show that the state consumes 52.4 litres of petrol per day for every 100 people, nearly five times the national average of 10.4 litres.

The data highlights Goa’s unique fuel consumption pattern, which is largely driven by its thriving tourism industry, a large fleet of rental vehicles, and one of the highest vehicle densities in the country. With millions of domestic and international tourists visiting the state every year, demand for fuel remains consistently high throughout the year.

Industry experts note that Goa’s extensive network of self-drive rental cars, motorcycles, taxis, and tourist transport vehicles contributes significantly to petrol sales. In addition, many residents own multiple vehicles, while the state’s relatively short travel distances encourage the use of private transport over public transit.

The high per capita consumption does not necessarily indicate that individual residents use more fuel than those in other states. Instead, the figures reflect the combined impact of resident vehicle ownership, tourist mobility, and commercial transportation, all of which substantially increase petrol demand.

The PPAC data also underscores the economic importance of tourism in Goa, with fuel consumption closely linked to visitor arrivals and transport activity. During peak tourist seasons, petrol sales often witness a noticeable rise as rental operators, taxis, and private vehicles remain in constant use.

While the high consumption reflects strong economic and tourism-related activity, it also highlights the growing need for sustainable mobility solutions. Experts have suggested that expanding public transport, encouraging electric vehicles, and strengthening green transport infrastructure could help reduce dependence on conventional fuels in the long run.

The latest PPAC figures place Goa well ahead of the national average, reinforcing the state’s position as one of India’s most transport-intensive and tourism-driven economies.
