Goa Tourism Minister Rohan A. Khaunte has expressed serious concern over the recent assault incident in Calangute, warning that such acts of violence tarnish Goa’s reputation as a safe and welcoming tourist destination.
Reacting strongly to the incident, the minister questioned the behaviour of those involved, stating, “Why would tourists come if you behave like this?” He stressed that Goa’s tourism industry thrives on the confidence and trust of visitors, and incidents that threaten their safety can have far-reaching consequences for the state’s image and economy.
Khaunte said that maintaining law and order in popular tourist destinations is of utmost importance and called for strict action against those responsible. He emphasized that neither tourists nor residents should have to face intimidation or violence while visiting or living in Goa.
The minister also appealed to stakeholders in the tourism sector, including local businesses, taxi operators, and residents, to work together in preserving Goa’s reputation as a peaceful and hospitable destination. He noted that responsible behaviour and respect for visitors are essential to sustaining the state’s tourism-driven economy.
The Calangute assault case has sparked widespread concern, with many calling for stronger enforcement and greater vigilance in tourist hotspots. Authorities continue to investigate the incident, while the government has reiterated its commitment to ensuring the safety and security of all visitors.
