Margao: A safety fence installed on the Margao–Navelim overbridge to protect commuters has come under scrutiny, with motorists and local residents alleging that it is now creating hazardous driving conditions instead of enhancing safety.
According to commuters, the fence significantly restricts visibility, making it difficult for drivers to spot oncoming vehicles, pedestrians, and potential hazards, particularly while navigating the bridge. The situation is said to worsen during the monsoon, when heavy rainfall and poor lighting further reduce visibility, increasing the risk of accidents.
Residents have also raised concerns over what they describe as a lack of maintenance and timely intervention by the concerned authorities. They claim that despite repeated complaints, no effective steps have been taken to address the issue, leaving thousands of daily commuters vulnerable.
Frequent users of the overbridge have urged the authorities to immediately inspect the structure and implement corrective measures, including improving visibility and reviewing the design of the fence. They believe that while the barrier was installed with the intention of enhancing safety, its current condition may be posing an unintended danger to motorists.
The growing concerns have sparked fresh calls for urgent action, with citizens stressing that preventive measures should be taken before another serious accident occurs. Many have appealed to the concerned departments to prioritise commuter safety by carrying out the necessary modifications and ensuring the overbridge remains safe for all road users.
Residents now hope the authorities will respond promptly to the complaints and take immediate corrective action to prevent further mishaps on one of the region’s busy road stretches.
