The Goa Public Works Department (PWD) has assured the public that the new Patto Bridge in Panaji is structurally safe, following recent concern over a visible gap and falling debris. PWD Executive Engineer Jude Carvalho clarified that the gap between the new and old bridge structures, measuring roughly 100 to 150 mm, was an intentional design feature introduced during construction in 2004 to accommodate movement and structural flexibility. The debris observed recently came from non-structural leftover concrete, which had been deposited during the initial construction phase and poses no threat to the bridge’s integrity. A detailed inspection was carried out by an independent consultant, who confirmed that both the old and new bridges meet current safety and durability standards. Authorities have reiterated that there is no cause for alarm, and regular maintenance of both bridges is ongoing to ensure their long-term safety.
