The Bardez Mamlatdar and Executive Magistrate, Anant Malik, ordered the immediate sealing of the popular beachside establishment, ‘Kiki by the Sea’, located at Badem in Assagao. Operating officially under the name Royal Tomato, or Tomato’s Beachside Kitchen and Bar, the premises were shut down following strict directives issued by the Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB). A memorandum was issued directing the local Assagao talathi to execute the sealing process without delay. Local revenue authorities were then required to submit a formal compliance report and a panchanama to the magistrate’s office to confirm the action.
This decisive enforcement action stems from the establishment’s repeated failure to adhere to mandatory environmental regulations. According to officials, the GSPCB flagged continuous non-compliance with pollution control norms by ‘Kiki by the Sea’. Despite being served with multiple warning notices previously, the bar and restaurant reportedly failed to meet the stipulated environmental conditions set by the board. The continued defiance of these regulations ultimately prompted the GSPCB to instruct revenue authorities to intervene and formally shut down operations.
The sealing of ‘Kiki by the Sea’ is part of a broader, state-wide crackdown by the GSPCB on tourism-related establishments violating environmental and sound regulations. In recent days, the pollution control board has taken severe punitive actions against several prominent nightclubs across the coastal belt for exceeding permissible noise levels, including imposing heavy environmental compensation fines and ordering immediate operational halts. While the board’s stringent measures aim to send a strong message to habitual offenders, local commentators have urged for consistent and widespread enforcement across all venues to ensure fairness and effectively curb the ongoing nightlife pollution dilemma in Goa.
