Margao Hospital Mortuary Overcrowded

Margao: The mortuary at Margao’s district hospital is reportedly facing severe overcrowding, prompting the Margao Municipal Council (MMC) to urge the concerned authorities to immediately release ₹15.21 lakh in pending funds to facilitate the disposal and clearance of unclaimed bodies.

According to municipal officials, the delay in releasing the funds has affected the timely disposal of bodies, resulting in the mortuary operating beyond its intended capacity. The situation has raised concerns over hygiene, storage limitations, and the smooth functioning of mortuary services.

The municipality has appealed to the government to expedite the release of the pending amount, stating that the funds are essential for carrying out the necessary procedures related to the handling and cremation or burial of unclaimed bodies in accordance with legal and health protocols.

Officials have warned that prolonged delays could further strain the facility and impact its ability to accommodate new cases. The issue has also sparked discussions on the need for a more efficient mechanism to ensure timely financial support for essential public health services.

Authorities are expected to review the matter and take appropriate action to address the situation at the earliest.
