Margao: In a continued effort to strengthen security and ensure compliance with legal documentation requirements, Margao Police detained 20 unverified labourers during a verification drive carried out across various parts of the town.
The operation was conducted as part of a routine police initiative aimed at verifying the identity and background of labourers working in the area. During the drive, officers checked identity documents, employment records, and other relevant credentials to ensure that workers were residing and employed in accordance with the law.
According to police, a total of 20 labourers who could not produce valid verification documents or whose details were yet to be confirmed were detained for further inquiry. Authorities are now verifying their identities, residential details, and employment status as part of the ongoing investigation.
Police officials stated that such verification drives are conducted periodically to maintain law and order, strengthen public safety, and keep track of migrant labourers residing in the region. The initiative also helps identify individuals staying in the area without proper documentation or those involved in any suspicious activities.
Authorities have appealed to contractors, employers, and property owners to ensure that all labourers employed by them are properly registered and verified with the local police. They reiterated that compliance with verification procedures is essential for maintaining security and preventing misuse of identities.
The police further clarified that the verification drive was a preventive measure and should not be viewed as targeting any particular group. Similar operations are expected to continue across different parts of South Goa as part of regular policing and security measures.
Further action will be taken based on the outcome of the verification process, officials said.
