Chief Minister Pramod Sawant has appealed to protesters and citizens to maintain calm amid ongoing tensions surrounding the proposed Ekta Mall site at Kadamba Plateau. The CM assured that the government remains open to dialogue and will meet representatives again to review the findings of the joint inspection currently underway.
The inspection process, which began earlier this month, is scheduled to conclude on January 27. It aims to assess environmental, infrastructural, and social concerns raised by locals and activists opposing the project. The Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) confirmed that a follow-up meeting will be held soon after the inspection results are finalized.
Sawant emphasized that the administration is committed to transparency and public participation. “We understand the concerns of the people and assure that every viewpoint will be considered before any decision is made,” he stated. The CM urged agitators to refrain from disruptive demonstrations and allow officials to complete the inspection process peacefully.
The Unity Mall project, proposed as part of a national initiative to promote local products and tourism, has faced resistance from residents and environmental groups. Protesters argue that the development could harm the ecological balance of the Kadamba Plateau and displace local communities.
Activists have been staging peaceful demonstrations, demanding that the government reconsider the location and conduct a thorough environmental impact assessment. “We are not against development, but it must be sustainable and inclusive,” said one protester.
Officials from the Goa State Infrastructure Development Corporation (GSIDC) and the Town and Country Planning Department are part of the inspection team. Their findings will play a crucial role in determining whether the project proceeds as planned or undergoes modifications.
The CM’s appeal for calm comes after reports of heightened tensions during recent protests. Police have maintained a visible presence in the area to ensure law and order.
As the inspection nears completion, both sides await the government’s next move. Sawant reiterated that constructive dialogue remains the best path forward. “Goa’s progress must align with its people’s aspirations and environmental priorities,” he said.
The outcome of the inspection and subsequent discussions will likely shape the future of the Unity Mall project and its impact on the Kadamba Plateau region.
