Goa Fishing Ban Begins From May 31 Midnight

Goa’s annual fishing ban will come into effect from midnight of May 31, Fisheries Minister Nilkanth Halarnkar announced, marking the start of the seasonal prohibition aimed at conserving marine resources and supporting the breeding cycle of fish.

The annual ban is enforced every year during the monsoon to protect fish stocks and allow marine life to reproduce without disturbance. During this period, mechanised fishing vessels and trawlers are prohibited from venturing into the sea, while traditional fishing activities may continue in accordance with the applicable regulations.

Announcing the commencement of the ban, Minister Halarnkar said the measure is essential for ensuring the long-term sustainability of Goa’s fisheries sector and preserving marine biodiversity. He urged fishermen and stakeholders to cooperate with the authorities and strictly adhere to the regulations during the ban period.

The Fisheries Department will monitor compliance with the seasonal restrictions, and action will be taken against those found violating the ban. Officials said the annual closure plays a vital role in replenishing fish populations, ultimately benefiting the fishing community through improved catches once the ban is lifted.

The fishing ban is a crucial part of Goa’s fisheries management strategy and is observed every year in line with conservation efforts across the west coast of India.
