Joint Inspection Held to Address Road Safety Gaps

Panaji: In a bid to strengthen road safety and address coordination gaps between government departments, a joint inspection was recently carried out by officials from multiple agencies to identify issues affecting road infrastructure and commuter safety.

The inspection brought together representatives from the concerned departments to assess existing road conditions, review ongoing infrastructure works, and identify areas requiring immediate attention. Officials discussed ways to improve inter-departmental coordination, which has often been cited as a key challenge in the timely execution of road safety measures and maintenance works.

During the inspection, authorities examined several factors contributing to road safety, including damaged road surfaces, potholes, drainage issues, road signage, street lighting, traffic management, and the impact of ongoing utility works. The exercise aimed to ensure that responsibilities are clearly defined and that departments work in a coordinated manner to resolve issues without unnecessary delays.

Officials emphasized that effective coordination among departments such as the Public Works Department (PWD), Traffic Police, Electricity Department, local bodies, and other civic agencies is essential to prevent infrastructure-related hazards and enhance commuter safety. They noted that improved communication and joint planning would help avoid duplication of work and reduce inconvenience to the public.

The initiative comes amid growing concerns over road accidents and infrastructure-related issues across the state, particularly during the monsoon season when damaged roads and poor visibility increase the risk for motorists. Authorities said that regular joint inspections would help identify potential hazards early and facilitate quicker implementation of corrective measures.

Officials also stressed the importance of adopting a proactive approach to road maintenance, ensuring that defects are addressed before they become major safety concerns. The inspection is expected to pave the way for better planning, faster execution of repair works, and more efficient coordination among departments responsible for public infrastructure.

Authorities have assured the public that recommendations made during the inspection will be acted upon, with the ultimate goal of creating safer roads, improving traffic management, and reducing accidents across Goa.
