Ashwem, Goa: A major fire broke out near Ajoba Temple in Ashwem–Mandrem on Sunday, engulfing several luxury cottages and causing widespread devastation. The blaze, which spread rapidly through the tourist accommodation units, reduced multiple structures to ashes and is believed to have caused property losses worth several crores of rupees.
Eyewitnesses said thick plumes of smoke could be seen from a considerable distance as the flames intensified within minutes, leaving little time to salvage property. The fire triggered panic among nearby residents, workers and tourists, who rushed out to safety while locals sprang into action to prevent the blaze from spreading to neighbouring structures.
In the absence of an immediate firefighting response, residents and bystanders reportedly used available resources to battle the flames and protect nearby properties. Several locals alleged that the fire brigade reached the spot after a significant delay, sparking criticism over the emergency response system in the coastal region. Many questioned whether adequate firefighting infrastructure is available in areas that witness heavy tourist footfall throughout the year.
Fortunately, no casualties or injuries have been reported in the incident. Authorities confirmed that all occupants of the affected cottages were safely evacuated before the fire could claim any lives. However, the material damage is extensive, with luxury cottages, furniture, electrical installations and other valuables completely destroyed.
Firefighters eventually managed to bring the blaze under control after an intensive operation, preventing it from spreading further. Officials are now carrying out a detailed assessment of the damage, while the exact cause of the fire is yet to be determined. An investigation has been launched to ascertain whether the blaze was triggered by an electrical short circuit, negligence or any other factor.
