Panaji: In a significant step towards strengthening urban local bodies, the Goa government has notified a new financial assistance scheme for C-Class Municipal Councils, aimed at easing their financial burden and ensuring timely payment of staff salaries and pensions.
Under the newly introduced scheme, eligible C-Class Municipal Councils will receive financial assistance of up to ₹50 lakh annually for the payment of salaries to municipal employees. In addition, the government will provide up to ₹25 lakh per year to help councils meet their pension obligations.
The initiative is intended to support smaller municipal councils that often face financial constraints due to limited revenue generation. By providing direct financial assistance, the government aims to improve the functioning of these local bodies while ensuring that employees and pensioners receive their dues without delays.
Officials said the scheme seeks to bridge the financial gap between smaller and larger municipal councils, enabling them to maintain essential civic services and strengthen local governance. The assistance is expected to ease the fiscal pressure on councils that struggle to generate sufficient funds for recurring expenditure.
The notification is part of the state’s broader efforts to improve the financial health and administrative efficiency of urban local bodies. Timely payment of salaries and pensions is expected to boost employee morale and ensure uninterrupted delivery of municipal services to residents.
The government is expected to issue detailed operational guidelines regarding the implementation of the scheme, including eligibility criteria, fund disbursement procedures, and compliance requirements for beneficiary municipal councils.
