Panaji: Two separate road incidents have raised fresh concerns over road safety in Goa, with one proving fatal and another prompting an investigation into suspected drunk driving.
In the first incident, a woman pedestrian from Baina lost her life after being struck by a Mahindra Thar at Alto Mangoor in Vasco. The victim, identified as Genadevi Jaiswar, sustained severe head injuries and was rushed to Goa Medical College (GMC), Bambolim, where she later succumbed to her injuries despite medical efforts.
Police have registered a case against the driver, Abhijit Rane of Orolim, alleging rash and negligent driving. An investigation into the fatal accident is currently underway.
In a separate incident in North Goa, a car crashed into Café El Mar at Tito’s Lane in Calangute, damaging the café’s glass entrance and a religious statue on the premises. While no injuries were reported, the incident caused significant property damage.
Authorities suspect the driver may have been under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash. CCTV footage of the incident has surfaced, and Calangute Police have launched an investigation to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the accident and whether drunk driving was a contributing factor.
The two incidents have once again highlighted the importance of responsible driving and strict enforcement of traffic laws as Goa continues to grapple with road safety concerns.
