CM Open to Talks Amid Growing Unity Mall Opposition

Chief Minister Pramod Sawant has indicated that the state government is open to holding discussions with stakeholders opposing the proposed Unity Mall project at Chimbel. The announcement follows escalating public protests, including a hunger strike by local residents and environmental activists.

At the heart of the conflict is the project’s proximity to Toyyar Lake, a notified wetland. Protesters and the Chimbel Village Panchayat argue that the mega-commercial structure will permanently damage the delicate ecosystem, threaten local biodiversity, and strain the village’s already vulnerable water supply and waste management systems.

The standoff has intensified following an interim stay order on construction issued by the North Goa Principal District Court. While the government previously defended the centrally funded mall as an economic booster for local artisans and employment, the Chief Minister’s shift toward dialogue appears aimed at defusing regional tensions. Striking villagers maintain they welcome talks but stand firm on their demand to relocate or scrap the project entirely to protect the lake ecosystem.
