16 Tourists Fall Ill; Suspected Food Poisoning in Arpora

A group of sixteen students from Kerala, visiting Goa on a study tour, were hospitalised late Thursday after reportedly suffering from suspected food poisoning in Arpora, North Goa. The incident has raised concerns over food safety standards at tourist eateries in the region, prompting an immediate investigation by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

According to initial reports, the students had dined at a local restaurant earlier in the evening before several of them began complaining of nausea, stomach pain, and vomiting. The symptoms intensified overnight, leading to their admission at a nearby hospital. Medical officials confirmed that all sixteen students are now stable and receiving treatment, though a few remain under observation.

An FDA team visited the restaurant on Friday morning to collect food samples and inspect hygiene practices. “We are analysing the samples to determine the cause of contamination,” said an FDA spokesperson. “Preliminary findings suggest improper food handling or storage could be a factor.”

Local authorities have also stepped in to ensure that the restaurant complies with health regulations. The establishment has been temporarily closed pending the outcome of the investigation.

Residents and tourists in Arpora expressed concern over the incident, noting that food safety lapses can severely impact Goa’s reputation as a tourist destination. “Arpora is known for its vibrant nightlife and dining spots. Incidents like this hurt the trust of visitors,” said a local business owner.

The Goa Tourism Department has urged all restaurants and food vendors to adhere strictly to hygiene standards, especially during peak tourist season. Officials emphasized that regular inspections will be intensified to prevent similar occurrences.

Meanwhile, doctors treating the affected students have confirmed that the illness appears consistent with bacterial food poisoning, though the exact pathogen—such as Salmonella or E. coli—will be identified once laboratory results are available.

This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of maintaining food safety protocols in tourist hubs. Authorities are expected to release a detailed report once the investigation concludes.
