The Mapusa Judicial Magistrate First Class (JMFC) Court has extended the judicial custody of Bijay Kumar Singh, the operations manager of Birch by Romeo Lane, by 14 days in connection with the ongoing investigation into the Birch fire case. The decision marks another significant development in the probe that has drawn widespread attention across Goa.
According to court officials, the extension was sought by the Anjuna Police, who are continuing their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the fire that broke out at the Birch establishment last month. The blaze caused extensive property damage and raised serious concerns about safety compliance and administrative oversight.
Singh, who was arrested earlier this month, is believed to have played a key role in the day-to-day operations of the venue. Investigators are examining whether lapses in safety protocols or negligence contributed to the incident. “We are still collecting evidence and verifying statements. The custody extension will help us complete pending inquiries,” said a senior police officer involved in the case.
The Birch fire case has already led to multiple arrests, including that of Raghuvir Bagkar, a terminated panchayat secretary accused of granting unauthorized permissions and failing to enforce safety measures. Bagkar’s arrest earlier this week intensified scrutiny on local administrative practices, and Singh’s continued detention suggests that investigators are pursuing multiple angles, including possible collusion between officials and private operators.
Sources close to the investigation revealed that police are analyzing communication records, financial transactions, and safety documentation related to the Birch property. The goal is to determine whether the establishment was operating in violation of fire safety norms or without proper clearances.
The Mapusa court, after reviewing the police’s request, agreed that further custody was necessary to allow investigators to recover additional evidence and question Singh in detail. The court also directed authorities to ensure that all procedures are conducted in accordance with legal standards.
Residents of the Birch locality have expressed frustration over the slow pace of the investigation but welcomed the court’s decision to extend custody. “We want accountability. The fire destroyed livelihoods and endangered lives. Those responsible must face justice,” said a local resident.
Meanwhile, the Goa Police have reiterated their commitment to transparency, assuring the public that all individuals connected to the case will be thoroughly investigated. The department has also sought assistance from forensic experts to determine the exact cause of the fire and whether it was accidental or deliberate.
Legal experts note that the extension of judicial custody indicates that the investigation is still in its critical phase. “Such extensions are common when authorities need more time to gather evidence or corroborate statements. It shows that the case is being pursued seriously,” said a local advocate familiar with the proceedings.
The Birch fire case has become a focal point for discussions on safety compliance and governance in Goa’s hospitality sector. Activists have called for stricter enforcement of building and fire safety regulations, particularly in establishments frequented by tourists.
As the investigation continues, authorities are expected to release more details about Singh’s alleged role and the evidence gathered during his extended custody. The case underscores the importance of accountability and vigilance in public administration and private enterprise alike.
