Leaders Discuss Demand to Scrap Coal Jetty Project

Amid growing public opposition to the proposed coal jetty project, several political leaders and community representatives convened discussions to address the mounting concerns surrounding its environmental and social impact. The meeting, held earlier this week, reflected a unified call to scrap the project entirely, citing threats to Goa’s coastal ecology and local livelihoods.

The proposed coal jetty, intended to facilitate coal handling and transportation, has faced criticism from environmental groups and residents who fear it could lead to pollution, habitat destruction, and long-term damage to marine ecosystems. Leaders at the meeting emphasized that Goa’s development must not come at the cost of its natural heritage.

“We cannot allow projects that compromise our environment and the well-being of our people,” said one participant, urging the government to reconsider its stance. The discussion highlighted the need for sustainable alternatives that align with Goa’s ecological balance and tourism-driven economy.

Local fishermen and coastal residents have expressed particular concern over the potential impact on fishing zones and water quality. They argue that increased coal dust and industrial activity could severely affect marine life and traditional livelihoods.

Environmental activists present at the meeting reiterated that the project contradicts Goa’s commitment to green development. They called for transparent environmental assessments and greater public participation in decision-making processes.

Political leaders from across parties echoed these sentiments, stressing that the government must prioritize public interest over industrial expansion. “Goa’s identity is rooted in its environment. Any project that threatens that must be opposed,” said one MLA.

The meeting concluded with a resolution to formally request the state government to halt all progress on the coal jetty proposal until comprehensive environmental studies are conducted and public consultations are held.

As opposition continues to grow, the debate over the coal jetty project underscores the broader challenge of balancing development with sustainability in Goa.
