Goa to Roll Out Nearly 200 Biogas Projects Across the State

Panaji: In a major push towards renewable energy and sustainable waste management, the Goa Government is planning to establish nearly 200 biogas projects across the state. The initiative aims to promote clean energy generation while encouraging the scientific management of organic and agricultural waste.

As part of the programme, eligible farmers and cattle shed owners will receive subsidy support to install biogas plants, making the technology more affordable and accessible. The scheme is expected to help rural households and agricultural communities convert cattle waste and other biodegradable materials into clean cooking fuel and organic manure.

The proposed biogas projects form part of the state’s broader efforts to promote renewable energy, reduce dependence on conventional fuels, and encourage environmentally friendly practices. Besides generating clean energy, the initiative is also expected to improve waste disposal, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and support sustainable farming.

Officials believe the programme will provide multiple benefits to farmers by lowering fuel costs, producing nutrient-rich organic slurry for agricultural use, and creating a cleaner environment in villages. The government expects the increased adoption of biogas technology to contribute to Goa’s long-term sustainability and climate goals.

The state will roll out the projects in phases, with eligible beneficiaries able to avail of financial assistance under the scheme. Authorities are expected to issue detailed guidelines regarding the application process, subsidy eligibility, and implementation in the coming months.

The initiative is seen as another step towards strengthening Goa’s renewable energy infrastructure while empowering rural communities with cost-effective and eco-friendly energy solutions.
