Goa PWD Minister Digambar Kamat to Install Nets on Bridges to Trap Litterbugs’ Trash

In a proactive step toward cleaner waterways and improved waste management, Goa Public Works Department (PWD) Minister Digambar Kamat has announced plans to install protective nets on bridges across the state to prevent garbage from being dumped into rivers. The initiative aims to curb pollution caused by litterbugs who habitually throw waste from bridges into Goa’s scenic water bodies.

The move comes after repeated complaints from environmental groups and local residents about the growing accumulation of plastic, bottles, and other debris in rivers. Minister Kamat stated that the project will begin with the Sal River Bridge, one of the most affected areas, before expanding to other key locations.

“This is a practical solution to a persistent problem,” Kamat said. “We cannot allow our rivers to become dumping grounds. Installing nets will help trap waste and discourage people from throwing garbage into the water.”

The nets will act as barriers, catching litter before it enters the river system. The collected waste will be periodically removed by maintenance teams, ensuring that waterways remain clean and navigable.

Environmentalists have welcomed the initiative, calling it a step in the right direction toward sustainable waste management. However, they also emphasized the need for stronger enforcement and public awareness campaigns to change behavior. “Infrastructure alone won’t solve the problem — people must understand the importance of keeping our rivers clean,” said one activist.

Local communities have expressed optimism about the project, noting that cleaner rivers will benefit tourism and fishing livelihoods. The PWD has assured that the nets will be designed to withstand weather conditions and will not obstruct water flow or aquatic life.

Minister Kamat also urged citizens to take responsibility for their surroundings. “Cleanliness is not just the government’s job — it’s everyone’s duty,” he remarked.

The initiative aligns with Goa’s broader environmental goals, including reducing plastic pollution and promoting eco-friendly practices. As the project rolls out, authorities hope it will serve as a model for other states facing similar challenges.
